Environmental Policy

Responsible use of natural resources is a fundamental component of corporate social responsibility and an important driver of sustainable development for Severstal. Our key environmental principles are defined in Severstal’s Environmental Protection Policy. The primary environmental objectives of Severstal are as follows:

  • Prevent contamination of the environment and contribute to the greenhouse gas reduction efforts
  • Use energy and natural resources economically and rationally
  • Efficiently manage waste.

Severstal is committed to full compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, and consistently develops and deploys efficient environmental management systems following international best practices. Severstal Cherepovets Steel Mill was the first Russian steelmaker to design and implement an environmental management system compliant with the ISO 14001 international standard.

Environmental management systems of Cherepovets Steel Mill, Karelsky Okatysh, Severstal Dearborn and several other corporate entities are ISO 14001:2004 certified.

Environmental component is an important part of all new construction and renovation projects. For example, renovation of coke battery 7 at Cherepovets Steel Mill scheduled for 2011−2013 will include dust-free coke discharge unit reducing dust emissions by 289 tonnes per year.

Severstal is committed to productive partnership with governmental authorities, employees, business partners, communities and experts to address environmental protection issues. Our managers and experts participate in the RSPP Environmental, Industrial and Technological Safety Committee. Severstal partners with worldsteel (World Steel Association) on scientific and practical climate change projects, and on projects related to deployment of emission reduction technologies.

Severstal has a large-scale program focused on reduction of its environmental footprint and more efficient use of natural resources. In 2011, we spent US$74 million on our environmental protection program.

In early 2012, PAO Severstal received the Environmentally Responsible Business Award off the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. This award is an attestation of our contribution to environmental protection initiatives.
